Deconstructing Your Fears
We did an exercise in class this week about deconstructing our fears. It was pretty eye-opening. I realized that most of my fears are associated with disappointing people, including myself. I was able to try out this exercise in another area of my life. I am planning a vacation and we are trying to decide on what activities that we want to participate in. Part of me wants to just go for it and push myself, but a very big part of me is terrified.
Activity: Rafting Kaituna river, the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world. It includes a 21-foot waterfall.
Fear: Falling out and drowning
Strategy to Mitigate Risk: Find an experienced guide, sit in the securest part of the boat, pay attention to all of the safety guidelines, wear a life jacket, and go swimming to become more comfortable in the water.
Way Back to the Status Quo: If I do fall out of the boat, they have people ready at the bottom of the waterfall to help collect people out of the water. I would need to remain calm and know that I won't be alone. I probably have a better chance of dying in a car crash, I couldn't find any reports of anyone dying going over the waterfall.
Activity: Bungee jumping at Kawarau Bungy Centre, home of the world’s first and most famous jump.
Fear: The bungee cord breaking and me dying.
Strategy to Mitigate Risk: Being honest with my weight and following safety instructions. Tandem jumping so I feel more secure.
Way Back to the status quo: Realizing that over a million people have jumped from this same bridge.
I could go on and on about activities and reasons why I shouldn't do them. Doing this exercise helped me really look into the reasons why I wasn't wanting to do certain activities. I haven't fully decided what I want to participate in but I feel more open about exploring possibilities.
I also found Jim Collins 3 circles impactful. They were, what you are good at, what you are born to do, and what people will pay you to do. I think these will be helpful when trying to figure out what I should do with my life. I think my challenge will be figuring out what I am born to do. I think every class that I take and every opportunity at work helps me get closer to this answer.
