Perseverance

This week we read some articles and started reading the book, A Field Guide for the Hero’s Journey. One of the things that struck me the most was that President Brigham Young told the saints, “The Temple will be built as soon as we are prepared to use it.” It took them 40 years to build it. I haven’t even been alive for 40 years. I can’t imagine the dedication that it must have took for a lot of these saints to keep going when the progress seemed so slow. It made me think about the second coming. Maybe Jesus Christ will come again when we are ready for him to. That’s probably why nobody knows when it will occur because it isn’t a predesigned date, it is when we have done the things that need to happen before Christ can return. He won’t come until we have proven ourselves worthy. During the 40 years that it took to build the temple, there were probably people who gave up. Maybe it became too difficult, maybe they became impatient, or maybe they couldn’t understand why they faced s...

Life Long Learning

This week we learned the importance of being a lifelong learner. The book Mastery , by George Leonard stressed the importance that the path of mastery begins with wanting to learn something new. We are never too old to become a master at something. We also read the talk Stand True and Faithful, by president Gordon B. Hinkley. He was the prophet of my youth and loved listening to him.  He taught the importance of supporting one another. Everyone needs support sometimes and he encouraged us to look for opportunities to be good friends and look for someone who is in need. He stressed the importance of taking advantage of opportunities to learn. We can learn from each other, from our parents, from ancestors, from the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and from our Savior. Another article that we read was about the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. I have read this book before but I enjoyed a refresher course on it. I love t...

So You Want to be an Entrepreneur?

If I had to answer this question right now, the answer would be, "No". I have never really been interested in owning my own company. I started my education with accounting in mind. The only business degree that BYUI offers is one with an emphasis in entrepreneurship. I've actually put off taking classes geared toward entrepreneurship in the hopes that they would make some other choices available. Seeing as how I'm a senior, I figured that I should just get going on them. In the article that we read this week, it says that there are 3 things you need to be able to start a successful business. They are having industry knowledge, knowing how to run the daily activities of a business, and being able to raise capital. I think that I could figure out how to run a business and come up with capital, but I'm unsure what industry that I would consider myself knowledgeable enough to feel secure about starting my own business. I liked how someone mentioned that most peopl...

Finding Your Passion

This week we read a case study about Erica Mills. She was able to turn her passion for art and design and turn it into a successful greeting card business. What struck me about her story was that it took a trial to put her on the right path. She was in a foreign country not able to speak their native language and without a way to work. Because she was driven, she didn't waste this time but found a way to be productive. She designed greeting cards and taught herself new skills. Mills was able to take her education and job experience and figure out a way to make a business using her passion for art and design. I wonder if she never would have faced the challenge of being in a foreign country if she would have pursued art. As a mom, it's difficult to remember what my true passions really are. I think it's in my nature to set aside my own needs and interest in order to take care of everyone else. It is going to take some time to rediscover the things that really excite me. ...
