Life Long Learning

This week we learned the importance of being a lifelong learner. The book Mastery, by George Leonard stressed the importance that the path of mastery begins with wanting to learn something new. We are never too old to become a master at something. We also read the talk Stand True and Faithful, by president Gordon B. Hinkley. He was the prophet of my youth and loved listening to him.  He taught the importance of supporting one another. Everyone needs support sometimes and he encouraged us to look for opportunities to be good friends and look for someone who is in need. He stressed the importance of taking advantage of opportunities to learn. We can learn from each other, from our parents, from ancestors, from the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and from our Savior.

Another article that we read was about the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. I have read this book before but I enjoyed a refresher course on it. I love the reminder to be proactive. If we want something, we need to be responsible to make it happen. I liked how he broke down responsibility as the ability to choose our own response. So many times in life you hear people complaining about their circumstances. We have the choice of how we respond to the things around us. Our attitudes make a huge difference in the way that we see the world.

I think the habit that I need to work on the most is synergize. I need to let people in more and not rely on my own understanding of everything. I am so used to being independent that sometimes I have a difficult time asking for help. I need to be more humble and take constructive criticism as it was intended. My family is happier when we work together instead of against each other.
